Novak Djokovic reached the Paris Masters final and that achievement guaranteed him finishing as the number one player in the world at the end of the year.
That is something Djokovic underlined as a goal before the season and the Serbian was very engaged after he converted the match point after Hurkacz. It's been a more emotional celebration for Djokovic who realized what he had done, and he did something special. Djokovic secured the year-end No. 1 for the 7th time in his career which topped the record of six held by Pete Sampras before that.
After the match Djokovic explained what it means for him:
"Just proud and extremely happy. Obviously, that was one of the biggest goals and it's always one of the biggest goals, to try to be No. 1 and end the season as No. 1- To do it for the record seventh time and surpass my childhood idol and role model, Pete, is incredible. Very grateful, very blessed to be in this position."
ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi also released a statmenet which reads:
"Finishing the season as No. 1 is a monumental achievement. To do it seven times, in this incredible era of men’s professional tennis, is hard to describe. Novak deserves huge credit and recognition for continuing to redefine excellence in our sport, year after year. Congratulations to him and his team on this outstanding new milestone."
Djokovic will have the chance to put an exclamation mark on his Paris run with a showdown against Medvedev in the final.
