Karolina Muchova is in the Roland Garros (French Open) semi-final as she outplayed former player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets 7-5 6-2.
It was a pretty interesting match overall with both players playing about as they were expected. Muchova played her typical measured approach with a calculated risk while the Russian mostly played attacking and aggressively as she usually does. What happened is basically that Pavlyuchenkova kind of played herself out of the match.
She wasn't as sharp enough and after dropping the first set her play basically became even more erratic than before. The first set was very crucial which is how these matchups generally tend to go. Muchova took an early lead playing a more balanced match with Pavlychenkova hitting her peak a few games after that making it 3-3.
Muchova then broke again for the 5-4 lead but couldn't finish it off as the Russian battled back to make it 5-5. The Czech player did get it done ultimately 7-5. The Russian was simply too erratic at times as she gave her opponent 8 break points which was too much. Even if she saved five of those, Muchova still broke her three times which is more than enough. The 9 winners and 15 unforced errors certainly didn't help especially when Muchova posted 13 and 10.
The second set was pretty much a snowball effect of the first one. More confident and more sure in her play, Muchova kept doing her thing while Pavlyuchenkova kept making mistakes. Ultimately she finished off her 2023 Roland Garros with a 5-7 2-6 loss against a much more stable opponent. A good run considering the circumstances for the Russian but also a matchup she could have won. For Muchova, a major breakthrough after battling injuries for a long time. A chance for a final.
