Kyle finished the previous season with five straight losses and hasn't played since Vienna in October, struggling to compete injury-free and seek higher ranking positions.
Kyle finished the previous season with five straight losses and hasn't played since Vienna in October, struggling to compete injury-free and seek higher ranking positions. In 2018, the young Briton reached the Australian Open semi-final and scored 36 wins, cracked the top-20 after the Madrid Open quarter-final and claimed the first ATP title in Antwerp. Still, Kyle's career has endured many problems since then, and he never reached the level that carried him into an elite group. Edmund's problems started after Vienna 2018, withdrawing from the Paris Masters to finish the season.
Defending massive 720 points in Melbourne at the beginning of 2019, the Briton lost in the opening round to Tomas Berdych in straight sets, leaving the top-20 and withdrawing from Rotterdam and Marseille. Returning at strong Indian Wells Challenger, Kyle defeated Andrey Rublev in the title match and carried that form to Indian Wells and Miami, where he lost in the fourth round to Roger Federer and John Isner.
He lost eight straight encounters in the rest of the season and found the form right at the end of it in Paris and the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid, hoping for more of the same in 2020. Barely ranked inside the top-70, Kyle started the previous season with three losses in the opening five matches ahead of the New York Open. The Briton defeated five rivals from outside the top-50 to lift his second ATP title and the first since October 2018, feeling good before the coronavirus halted his progress.
Edmund gave his best against Novak Djokovic at the US Open in the second round, challenging the mighty opponent in a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 loss after three hours and 13 minutes! The Johannesburg native started to feel the pain in his knee again, withdrawing from Hamburg and Roland Garros and wrapping up the year with five straight losses! Kyle was back on the practice court and in the gym ahead of the new season, but he had to undergo minor surgery to fully recover and get back on the winning course.
"I had a small procedure on my knee. I'm currently rehabbing. The recovery is going well, and I hope to be back on the court as soon as possible," Kyle Edmund said.
