Nick Kyrgios had to endure quite a comeback from Khachanov in order to reach the 4th round. After winning it Kyrgios laid on the ground and stayed there for a while. Scenes like that are common in the world of tennis but they mostly happen when a player win's a huge tournament. While Nick didn't win the Aussie Open yet, it was one of his most memorable wins to date.
Speaking to the media afterwards he said:
"That was definitely one of the craziest matches I've ever been a part of. It was insane. Had a match point in the third, a match point in the fourth. Then 8/7 down, I had all the thoughts. I thought I was going to lose. I was thinking about everything... It was crazy.”
His victory meant he would face Rafa Nadal for a place in the quarterfinals. Every match these two play becomes a spectacle. Not only because the level of play is exciting but because the players do share some controversial history. Nick Kyrgios is known to be widely criticised in the world of tennis and one of his most vocal critics is Nadal. But the Aussie showed respect to his opponent when asked about the match:
“I'm super excited, honestly. Playing one of the greatest tennis players on centre court at your own Slam, it's pretty damn cool. “Obviously it's going to be another physical battle. Nothing comes easy with him. He had a relatively routine match, so he's going to be feeling good. I'm looking forward to it. That's why you play.”
He was also asked how he feels because not only did he play his longest match ever he is known, by self-admission, not to train enough. He gave a short response:
“I feel good. I feel like my game is ready to go."
The match will be the last of the day in the late stages of the night session. It should start early in the morning CET.
