Team World has announced two new editions for the
Laver Cup
2024. The mega-event will be played from September 20 to 22 in Berlin where
Team World and Team Europe will face off to secure the ultimate glory.
As per the latest report, Argentina’s
Francisco Cerundolo
and Australia’s
Thanasi Kokkinakis have been included in the Team World as a replacement
of Australia’s Alex de Minaur and America’s Tommy Paul. Both players have withdrawn
from the competition because of a fitness concern.
De Minaur recently participated in the US Open, where he lost
to Britain’s Jack Draper in the quarterfinal in straight sets with a score of
6-3, 7-5, 6-2. On the other hand, Paul was knocked out of the fourth and final
Grand Slam of the year in the round of 16 when he lost to world number one
Italy’s Jannik Sinner in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6, 6-1.
Cerundolo suffered a surprise exit from the US Open as he
lost in the second round to fellow countryman Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a five-set
thriller with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Kokkinakis, on the other
hand, also lost in the second round of the US Open to Portugal’s Nuno Borges in
straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 7-5.
Former world number one John McEnroe will lead Team World. The team will consist of 2024 US Open runner-up America’s
Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Alejandro Tabilo, Cerundolo and Kokkinakis.
On the other hand, Team World will be led by Sweden’s legendary tennis star Bjorn
Borg. He will have the services of a star-studded lineup including the likes of legendary
tennis star Spain’s Rafael Nadal, world number two Alexander Zverev, four-time
Grand Slam winner Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, three-time Grand Slam runner-up
Norway’s Casper Ruud, 2021 US Open winner Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and world
number 11 Spain’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.
