World number 28 Elina Svitolina has stated that she is satisfied with her performance in the 2024 season despite struggling with a number of fitness concerns. The 30-year-old had a tough campaign where she suffered injuries which kept her out of action for a long period of time.
Svitolina’s most recent appearance was during the US Open where she was knocked out after losing in the third round to America’s young tennis sensation Coco Gauff with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Her best outing this year at a major event came at Wimbledon, where she was eventually knocked out of the competition after losing in the quarterfinal to world number four Elena Rybakina in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
In the other major events, the Odesa-born star was knocked out of the Australian and the French Open after losing in the fourth round. Svitolina was recently quoted in a report confirming that she will not take the court again in 2024. The former world number three also went on to express satisfaction with her performances throughout the year when she was dealing with fitness concerns. Svitolina was of the opinion that if she manages to finish in the top 30, considering what she has been through this year, it can be considered a ‘good result’.
"I had a good season,” she said. “I already finished it because I got injured. To finish this year in the top 30 is a good result, considering that I was injured more [of the time] this season. The Olympics went well. Unfortunately, I couldn't bring home a medal, but there were great victories. Did I manage to approach the Games at the peak of my form, given the injury? No, I didn't manage to do so at the peak. I didn't play as I wanted in the following tournaments because I was injured. I wanted more, I wanted to play better. Now I will treat my injuries. I hope that I can start my next season better.”
