The opening three editions of the Laver Cup in Prague, Chicago and Geneva produced thrilling encounters between the world's leading players, including the founder Roger Federer.
The fourth edition will take place in Boston in September 2021, with the organizers confirming Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem as the first competitors for the Team Europe squad. Mats Wilander believes that Laver Cup drives and motivates Roger, knowing he can play it for four or five more years and enjoy both the singles and doubles. The Swede supposes that the Laver Cup and the Olympic Games are Roger's most significant goals at this point in a career, doing his best to keep the Laver Cup alive for many more years.
"The Laver Cup is, in my opinion, what drives Roger Federer. I've never seen him get so excited about a team event like the Laver Cup, and certainly not the Davis Cup. The Laver Cup, he knows he can play it for four or five more years. There are only two winning sets, and he can still play doubles. He is tournament property, so I think he needs to stay in shape, given how he behaves during this competition. I don't think he wants to give up on this. I think for Roger Federer, his goals are the Laver Cup and the Olympics," Mats Wilander said.
