The top story on my latest Reddit email was about Laver Cup blocking tweeters who shared a link to my Slate article. Looks like it’s happened to dozens of tweeters who they are trying to silence. Seems to have had the opposite effect…
Alexander Zverev and his physical abuse allegations came back into prominence shortly before the US Open after journalist Ben Rothenberg published a detailed account of all the allegations.
The allegations were made by his former girlfriend Olya Sharipova who detailed all that allegedly happened during her relationship with Alexander Zverev. The most severe of the allegations detailed an incident in 2019 in Geneva when Zverev played in the Laver Cup. Sharipova claims to have attempted suicide after which Zverev brought in a Laver Cup official to deal with the situation. You can read the full piece here.
Two days ago the Laver Cup Twitter page shared a quote from Zverev where he mentions all the incredible memories from the 2019 Laver Cup which caused a lot of reactions from tennis fans in the comments. Many pointed out the article and the horrific experience Sharipova claims to have had in Geneve with the event blocking all of those.
The result was picked up by the journalist who wrote the piece (Ben Rothenberg) who shared it on his official Twitter page wondering why the tennis governing bodies insist on being silent about a clearly controversial matter. Rothenberg himself noted by writing:
"Laver Cup is organized by several bodies (Team 8, ATP, Tennis Australia) who have all not responded to inquiries about the accusations. Understandably, the choice to promote the 2021 Laver Cup with Zverev fondly recalling the 2019 event has jarred a lot of people. Just…why?"
