Leylah Fernandez didn't play a very good match in the first round of the
Madrid Open losing quite easily to 15-year-old
Mirra Andreeva 6-3 6-4.
The Canadian didn't play a single match on clay before this event and it was quite apparent early on as she didn't quite find the rhythm in this one.
She tried to be aggressive and attack but far too many of those balls sailed wide as she struggled to find a way to counter her opponent. Her opponent played a very smart match.
Andreeva noticed fairly early that Fernandez was struggling with her play and she resorted to getting the ball back in most rallies.
She attacked here and there carefully picking her spot to do so but generally she simply played a better match.
There was a pretty stark difference in the crucial rallies as she saved most of the break points she faced while converting very well on Fernandez's serve as well.
She also served better overall which is an important thing to add. Fernandez continues to struggle with her tennis as she simply can't find any consistency whatsoever. She'll need to work very hard in order to keep her ranking somewhat respectable after these latest struggles. This wasn't a good start to that.
