Former Australia’s tennis player Paul McNamee believes that
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic is now just one win away from achieving the ‘next big
thing’.
The 36-year-old is one win away from lifting his 24th
Grand Slam title after reaching the final of the US Open 2023 with a thumping
win against America’s young tennis sensation Ben Shelton with a score of 6-3,
6-2, 7-6.
McNamee, who won two doubles and one mixed doubles Grand
Slam title in his career, in a post on social media platform X — previously
known as Twitter — stated that while Djokovic is set to miss the year Slam once
again but he is on his way to achieve the next big thing.
"Novak Djokovic may or may not miss the calendar year
Slam again by a single match. Remarkable. But let’s not forget that, like
Serena and Martina, he has done the next best thing… holding all four Slams at
the same time, which is arguably just as good," he wrote.
Djokovic will be hoping to avoid another heartbreak after
losing the Wimbledon 2023 final to the current world number one Spain’s Carlos
Alcaraz in a five-set thriller with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
He will face the world number three Russia’s Daniil Medvedev
in the final of the mega-event on Sunday. The 27-year-old defeated Alcaraz in
the semifinal of the competition with a score of 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 on Friday.
Both teams have played each other 14 times at the highest
level where the current world number two has a clear edge with nine wins
compared to Medvedev’s five victories.
Interestingly, while playing on the hard court, the
competition remains pretty close where Djokovic has a slight edge with four
wins and three defeats.
The two players faced off in the final of the US Open in
2021 where Medvedev came on top in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
