Canadian Open quarter-finals postponed after rain disrupts Montreal schedule

Rain has forced the postponement of the first two Canadian Open quarter-finals in Montreal, with Rafael Jodar vs. Arthur Fils and Luciano Darderi vs. Brandon Nakashima both pushed to Tuesday after organizers were unable to find a sufficient window to complete the scheduled matches. The disruption came after a day of increasingly difficult weather conditions in Montreal.
Rain began affecting the tournament during the afternoon, but organizers initially kept the two quarter-finals on the Monday night schedule. Jodar and Fils were still expected to take the Centre Court later in the evening, with Darderi and Nakashima scheduled to follow. The tournament continued to monitor conditions rather than immediately move the matches to Tuesday.
The situation remained uncertain until minutes before Jodar and Fils were scheduled to begin, when another spell of rain prevented the match from getting underway. Organizers subsequently maintained the possibility of a late start for several hours, waiting for conditions to improve. Once the rain stopped, tournament staff moved onto Centre Court to dry the playing surface.
The drying process raised hopes that the quarter-finals could eventually begin, with the interruption already stretching to roughly two hours beyond the originally scheduled start time. However, the improvement in conditions did not last long enough to allow play to resume, as further rain returned to Montreal and once again left the courts unplayable.
Jodar and Fils now face Tuesday showdown
Jodar and Fils will now have to wait another day for their latest meeting, with a place in the Canadian Open semifinals at stake. Their Lexus ATP Head2Head series is tied at 1-1, with Fils winning their first encounter in the Barcelona semifinals earlier this season before Jodar responded with a straight-sets victory in Washington last month.
The Spaniard has been one of the stories of the tournament and enters the quarter-final as the No. 13 player in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. The 19-year-old is chasing his first Masters 1000 semifinal after reaching the final at the ATP 500 event in Washington and continuing his strong hard-court run in Montreal.

Fils, meanwhile, is playing his fourth Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season and is seeking a third semifinal at this level after previously reaching the last four in Miami and Madrid. The Frenchman will have to wait another day for the chance to reverse his recent defeat to Jodar and move one step closer to the title.
The other quarter-final will feature Darderi and Nakashima, with both players also pursuing a major breakthrough. Darderi recorded his 30th win of the season to reach his second Masters 1000 quarter-final, while Nakashima is competing at this stage of the tournament for the first time. A victory would also move the American to a new career-high No. 25 in the live rankings.
The revised schedule begins with Darderi vs. Nakashima at 12:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, followed by Jodar vs. Fils. The two matches will determine the first semifinalists of the Montreal Masters 1000, provided weather conditions finally allow the quarter-final stage to begin.
