Ben Shelton dethrones reigning champion
Taylor Fritz 6-4,
2-6, 6-4 to win the
Stuttgart Open for his first ever grass title.
It is a
third title triumph in 2026 for Shelton following
successes on hardcourt in Dallas and clay in Munich. The one on home soil was
against Fritz in another very tight match. Fritz missed match points in that
tie. He did not have the luxury of creating any today with Shelton managing to
get over the line.
He edged the first set before a magnificent display by Fritz
saw him get back level. It was a very tense third set with crucial break points
being missed by Fritz. This would be a very important note in this match as
Shelton took his chance before sealing the title with his first championship
point in
Stuttgart.
Shelton gets the better of Fritz in tight final
As expected, the majority of the match would be holds of serve.
On a surface like grass with two big servers, this is keeping with the trend. After
both settled with a hold, Shelton broke the serve with his second opportunity.
This would prove to be a pivotal game.
Fritz dropped just one point on serve for the rest of the set
while creating chances against it. In total, five opportunities emerged with
the first three of these being right after that Shelton break. Another two
chances came and went as Shelton culminated the set with a commanding hold to
love and blasted himself ahead.
Fritz responded really well. The 2025 winner was not going
to let his young American foe get the better of him that easily. He began with
a third consecutive hold to love before breaking in brilliant fashion. He
dropped just one point in those opening three games in a dominant streak.
Ben Shelton won a third ATP title in 2026 at the Stuttgart Open
He was the better player at the start of the third set, dropping
just one point on serve in his opening three service games to go 3-2 ahead. He sailed
into a 15-40 lead on the Shelton serve as he looked to move two games away from
defending his title. Shelton kept on tabs with his fellow countryman and got proceedings
level once more.
These opportunities missed would prove to be very costly.
Shelton bucked the hold of serve trend in the ninth game to break and would
have the chance to serve it out for the title. He sealed it with his first championship point in a fine manner to defeat Fritz once more in a final and secure more ATP title success.
