Australia’s tennis star
Nick Kyrgios believes that ATP’s initiative
of introducing a minimum salary is not ‘enough’.
The men’s tennis federation has recently announced that from
2024, the top 300 players in the ATP rankings will have a basic salary.
According to the information, the top 100 players will earn $300,000
per year, from 101-200 will earn $150,000 per year whereas players from 201-300
will earn $75,000 per year.
While responding to a post on social media platform X — previously
known as Twitter— the 2022 Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios, who is currently spending
time on the sidelines after having fitness concerns throughout the year, stated
that the steps are ‘still not enough’.
ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi recently announced the minimum base
salary initiative which will be called the ‘Baseline’.
"We’re beyond excited to introduce Baseline,” said the 50-year-old
in a statement. “This initiative is a complete shift in the way tennis
approaches player finances. It represents our commitment to the players and
their careers - fostering an environment where they can thrive and elevate the
sport. It is also just the start of what we hope to achieve. Our ambition is to
expand this game-changing initiative in the years to come."
ATP’s Player Advisory Council Member Grigor Dimitrov also
praised the move and stated that the steps show the commitment of the organisation
to help players have a better and stable future.
"Being a professional tennis player comes with
incredible rewards, but it's also a challenging journey, especially for those
starting their careers,” he said. “Baseline is a game-changer. Knowing that we
have a safety net through the minimum guarantee and injury protection pillars
gives us peace of mind, allowing us to focus on our game and strive for
success. This truly shows the ATP's commitment to the players and the future of
our sport.”
