Holger Rune suffered his worst defeat ever in relative to ranking and scoreline as he was thrashed by Hungarian spoiler, Fabian Marozsan on Sunday night at the
Miami Open in a match he admitted he shouldn't have played.
Rune was beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Marozsan who famously defeated a certain Carlos Alcaraz in Rome last year, but has only just emerged again recently after failing to build on that big win last year. But for the Dane, it wasn't the question of his opponent being better, Rune said that he was feeling unwell prior but went along with it expecting to play better than he did. Now he will move swiftly onto Europe and look to put it behind him.
“Unfortunately this was the end of the Miami Open [for me],” said Rune just hours after his loss to Marozsan on Sunday. “I knew I wasn’t feeling 100% well today but I didn’t imagine my energy level would be so low.”
“Looking back I should’ve pulled out. But it’s always difficult because I had been preparing and wanting to play for a week. Time to go back to Europe. Thanks for the support Miami.”
While for his opponent, he couldn't quite believe how quickly he had sealed the win in what is new circumstances for him playing on such a big stage and stadium he admitted, but he moves through to the Last 32 and with Alexei Popyrin awaiting could make further strides. “When I came out of the Stadium I said to my coach, ‘I can’t believe what just happened!’” Marozsan told press. “It was very quick! Just, like, one hour or something like this…
“It’s still a new feeling for me. I’ve never played before in Miami, I’ve never played in the stadium. These are all new things for me, but I was very happy to win so (comfortably) today.”
