Lorenzo Musetti is going to play in the
Hamburg European Open final after beating a red-hot but tired
Francisco Cerundolo 6-3 7-6(4).
The Italian came to Hamburg with very poor results this year but he played very well in round one and it kind of only got better from there. Musetti played one good match after another and with today's one he's in the Hamburg final. The opponent was a very tricky one in Francisco Cerundolo who has been on a tear in the last two weeks but the Argentine ran out of steam in this one.
He was very tired yesterday in the match against Karatsev but was able to pull out of the win however today was simply too much. From the start, he looked quite slow and dragged himself on the court as Musetti was flying all over it.
The Italian took a convincing 5-0 lead before Cerundolo pulled one break back to make it 5-3. Musetti finished off the set 6-3 outplaying Cerundolo from the baseline. The Argentine played aggressively but he was missing a lot of balls he usually would hit and it never properly stopped. Musetti was up an early break in the 2nd set as well but the Argentine briefly battled back.
Musetti had the chance to finish it off at 5-4 but the Argentine battled back once more. Eventually, we ended up in a tiebreak and it was Cerundolo who won the first point but Musetti ended up winning it 7-4. A maiden ATP 500 final for the Italian in Hamburg.
