Lorenzo Musetti cannot catch a break. The Italian has been forced to skip
Wimbledon and the whole of the grass swing following problems with his thigh.
Injury has been the main talking point surrounding Musetti's 2026 campaign. He came off the back of a tremendous 2025 where consistency and deep runs saw him debut in the ATP Finals and cement his position in the top five in the world.
He wrote a statement on
Instagram: “I want to update you on my recovery from the injury I sustained in Rome: rehabilitation is going very well and the medical results are encouraging,” Musetti wrote.
“Unfortunately, as I have not yet been able to begin a full athletic training program, and after careful evaluation, we have come to the difficult conclusion that I will not be able to participate in Wimbledon this year. It is not an easy decision, but it is the right one. My priority is to return to the court at 100%. Thank you for your continued support — see you soon.”
More bad luck for Musetti as Wimbledon off the schedule
Unfortunately, his tennis career for the time being has gone into a period on the sidelines. It all started at the Australian Open when he was two sets up against Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. He would climb up to world number four with a win and make his presence felt amongst the top players in the sport even more while challenging for a Grand Slam.
However, a
sudden outburst of pain in his right leg forced him to retire in heartbreaking manner. It prevented an all-Italian clash in a Grand Slam semi-final (which would be seen at Roland Garros) with the 24-year-old set for a spell on the sidelines.
He missed the entirety of the Golden swing in South America. That was a great opportunity to continue his fine form on clay, a surface he is very fond of, and continue the momentum for the Sunshine swing.
He made a return at Indian Wells, losing in his opening match in straight sets against Marton Fucsovics. Miami was scraped with a huge clay swing in store. Musetti had reached the final in Monaco before semi-final runs in Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros made for an ominous clay swing with so many points to defend.
Lorenzo Musett will miss the full grass swing
A first round exit at the Monte-Carlo Masters was followed by a quarter-final in Barcelona. Then it was back to the Masters 1000 events, losing in the last1-6 in both Madrid and his home event in Rome. That was the last time he stepped on court.
That pesky right thigh issue continued to haunt him with Roland Garros
not being participated. A former semi-finalist at Wimbledon, he was hopeful of repeating the fate in a return to SW19. That will sadly no longer be the case. Fans expectantly wait for Musetti to get back to full fitness with him having plummeted to 15th in the world.
While he is missing from action, Italian tennis is still in safe hands. Jannik Sinner reigns supreme at the top with French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli, Luciano Darderi, Matteo Arnaldi and Matteo Berrettini all enjoying recent success.
