Lorenzo Musetti's 2026 has gone from bad to worse. Injury has blighted his progress throughout the year, and now he has been forced to withdraw from Roland Garros, losing the points he earned from reaching the semi-final last year with another drop in the rankings set to occur.
It comes after another injury-impacted tournament in none other than the Rome Open. He managed to soldier his way through a tight match against Francisco Cerundolo before Casper Ruud saw him off with ease, sportingly wishing him well.
After the last-16 match at Foro Italico, Musetti went to check up on his injury, and the results were not good. He has suffered a rectus femoris injury that will keep him out of the second Grand Slam of the year along with the Hamburg Open, and making his grass swing also very uncertain with Wimbledon shortly coming up.
He unveiled the news on Instagram. “After yesterday's match, I underwent medical examinations which revealed a rectus femoris injury, requiring several weeks of rest and recovery. Unfortunately, this means I won't be able to compete in Hamburg and Roland Garros — news that is incredibly hard to take. A huge thank you to the Rome crowd for your incredible support: that's exactly why, despite not being 100%, I chose to step on court and give everything I had in my home tournament. I'll keep you updated.”

Injury woes and ranking drop: Musetti's 2026 continues to get worse

The Italian really cannot catch a break. He had the chance to rise to world number three while being on the brink of a third Grand Slam semi-final in the Australian Open. However, despite being two sets ahead against 10-time champion Novak Djokovic, he was forced to retire.
This cost him the whole golden swing while leaving him in an unstable condition for the Sunshine swing. An early exit at Indian Wells was backed up with a withdrawal from the Miami Open.
His clay swing was under heavy scrutiny after last year. A final in Monte-Carlo was backed up with semi-finals in Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros. He was dumped out at the first hurdle in Monaco while exiting at the last-16 stage in Madrid and Rome. Sandwiched in between was a defeat against eventual champion Arthur Fils in the Barcelona Open.
The most recent one in front of his own fans was a tough pill to swallow. What is as painful is the fact that he will miss the French Open, adding his name to a long line of withdrawals from the tournament including Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune and Jack Draper.
After dropping out of the top 10 for the first time in a year, he is set to plummet even further with the points earned from his run in Paris being taken off while others gain around him. He will look to get back on track after he recovers.
