Gael
Monfils defeated
Jordan Thompson in the third round of the Miami Open and
reached a big career milestone with his 550th victory. The 37-year-old
Frenchman defeated the 33rd seed 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 and became the eighth active
tennis player to reach that number of wins.
Since the
beginning of the Open Era, 42 players have achieved 550 victories, and Monfils
is only the second Frenchman to do so. The former world No. 6 has secured 130
of his victories in Masters 1000 tournaments and another 121 in Grand Slam
tournaments since the start of his professional career in 2004.
The
Frenchman has been putting on good performances in recent weeks in the Sunshine
Double. First, at Indian Wells, he reached the round of 16 and defeated Max
Purcell, Hubert Hurkacz (8th seed), and Cameron Norrie (28th seed), but lost to
world No. 9 Casper Ruud.
This week
at the Miami Open, he again had consecutive victories, against Dusan Lajovic
and Jordan Thompson, but now the challenge will be greater as he faces the
world No. 2 and first seed
Carlos Alcaraz. So far, they have only faced each
other once in the 2022 Indian Wells with a victory for the Spanish player.
