Hamad
Medjedovic overcame
Arthur Fils 3-4, 4-1, 4-2, 3-4, 4-1 to clinch the Next Gen
ATP Finals title.
The young Serb
player emerged as the new champion in the tournament for the best 21-and-under
players of the season after a masterful duel with French Arthur Fils. Both
entered the final undefeated with four victories, leading their respective
groups.
Fils
secured a spot in the final by defeating his compatriot Luca Van Assche 1-4,
4-1, 4-3(1), 4-3(6) in the semifinals. On the Serbian side, Medjedovic claimed
victory after an injury prevented Dominic Stricker from continuing, resulting
in a walkover with Medjedovic leading 4-3(5), 2-1.
The match
began evenly, with both players holding their serves, leading to a tie-break
after a 3-3 deadlock. In the decisive moment, Medjedovic squandered two set
points, including one on his serve, and Fils ultimately took a 4-3(6)
advantage.
In the
second set, Medjedovic did not succumb to pressure and secured an early break.
The Serbian had no issues from his service games, demonstrating aggressive
play. He also capitalized on Fils' low first serve percentage of 36%, far from
Medjedovic's impressive 80%.
In the
third set, Medjedovic once again had a stellar start with an early break in the
first game. The Serbian showcased his best form, winning all three service
games without giving any chances to the French player.
Fils
regained his form in the fourth set, and despite facing break points,
Medjedovic managed to save them, forcing the set into a tie-break. With nerves
evident on both sides, Medjedovic had two match points but couldn't capitalize.
Finally, Fils seized his fourth set point, taking the match to the fifth set.
In the
fifth set, Medjedovic proved to be the more consistent player, quickly taking
the lead by capitalizing on Fils' unforced errors. The Frenchman was visibly
frustrated, smashing his racket between games. Ultimately, Medjedovic secured
the victory 3-4, 4-1, 4-2, 3-4, 4-1, and claimed the
Next Gen ATP Finals
trophy.
Fils
becomes the sixth tennis player to win the ATP Finals, joining Hyeon Chung (No
Ranking), Stefanos Tsitsipas (World No. 6), Jannik Sinner (No. 4), Carlos
Alcaraz (No.2), and Brandon Nakashima (No. 133).
