Amid Novak Djokovic's excellence over Adrian Mannarino, it is perhaps Jannik Sinner who will be the player most likely to snap his Australian Open streak after another epic display to down Karen Khachanov who played well against the Italian but didn't stand a chance in the end.
It was a straight sets win for Sinner who took it 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 and amid his recent form surge, he is into his second Australian Open Quarter-Final better than ever and is the only player in the men's draw so far not to drop a set at all.
The night session match next up on Rod Laver Arena carries some intrigue for Sinner as he will face either Andrey Rublev or Alex de Minaur for a spot in the semi-finals and give his current form, who would bet against him.
It was all about fine margins for Sinner that he took as despite Khachanov playing well, Sinner used his game to full effect. He went 2-1 up in the opening set with a dominant service break which proved to be the catalyst to seal the opener. He survived two break point chances in the next game and in sealing the set, he was 15-40 down as Khachanov looked to level it at 5-5 but the Russian couldn't take his chances and Sinner stayed resolute to the task in hand.
They exchanged breaks to start the second both in dominant fashion and it was mainly Sinner's serve that was troubled, but the Italian in another iteration of fine margins took a break after being 15-40 down on Khachanov's serve to go 6-5 up and went one away. The final set in comparison was a much easier task with Sinner speeding through despite Khachanov not playing at all poorly. He took breaks in the last two service games as he upped the tempo and took it to Khachanov's serve to great effect sealing it 6-3. Superb from Sinner who now moves on and with a statement win will look to show why he is touted by some as the winner in Melbourne.
