After his solid debut against Taro Daniel in the first round of the
Shanghai Masters 2024, just one day later
Jannik Sinner had a tough match against Tomás Etcheverry to qualify for the round of 16.
After losing the first set in the tie break, the world No. 1 managed to come back from a tough match to reach the top 16 of the ATP 1000 by winning the match against the Argentine 6(3)-7, 6-4, 6-2.
Etcheverry pulls off a surprise in the first set
In the first set, the first games had hardly any history. With no break points, the match went to 3-3. Here, with Sinner on serve, the world number 1 faced the first break chance of the match, but managed to save it to make it 4-3.
In the same way, in the next game it was Etcheverry who had to save the first break point for the Italian. After the Argentine got the 4-4, Sinner would have two break and set balls with 6-5 in his favor after getting 15-40, but Etcheverry was very confident and saved both to send the set to a tiebreak.
In the tie break, perhaps still thinking about the one he lost against Carlos Alcaraz that gave the Spaniard the title at the China Open last Wednesday, Sinner started very badly, allowing Etcheverry to go up to 1-4. At 3-5, Sinner suffered a mini break and the Argentine had 3 set balls. At the first opportunity, Tomas Etcheverry hit the Italian and took the first set by 6(3)-7.
Sinner responds in the second set
In the second set, Jannik Sinner's answer to the setback of the first was to come when the score was 2-2 and with Etcheverry on serve. The world number 1 got the first break of the match. Even so, the Argentinean was still at a high level, and made a counterbreak to return equality to the scoreboard, 3-3.
Sinner broke his opponent's serve again to make it 4-3. This time, the Italian would confirm the break, and went ahead to 5-3. Serving to win the set, Sinner closed the second set 6-4 and sent the match to the third and final set with an empty set.
Sinner completes the comeback
In the third and final set, Jannik Sinner quickly put his victory on track by breaking Tomás Etcheverry's serve at 1-1. After confirming the break and taking a 3-1 lead, the Italian had two break points to practically clinch the match, but the Argentinean saved both to hold on to one last hope, 3-2.
Etcheverry had not said his last word, and had a break point at 30-40 in the next game. Even so, Sinner did not want to let this advantage slip away, he turned the situation around and made it 4-2, getting closer and closer to victory. With another break, which left him 5-2, the Italian left the Argentine sentenced, and with his serve Sinner closed the match 6-2 to qualify for the round of 16 of the Shanghai Masters.
