Jannik Sinner is through to the Last 16 at the 2024 US Open after hammering Christopher O'Connell 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. As the big names flounder, the Italian continues to keep motoring.
Now it will be either Gabriel Diallo or Tommy Paul for the top seed for a spot in the Quarter-Finals of the 2024 US Open. It also sees Sinner continue his impetus as the rank favourite to seal the title next week.
The Italian ace ranks far and away the best out of anyone left with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic being defeated in successive nights. But it won't be a third big name falling as he took down the World No.87 who had a good run but was no match for Sinner.
Albeit he did flirt with the potential of getting into the tie either side of two fairly one sided thumpings. The opening set really did set the tone as Sinner claimed it 6-1 and barely lost a point on his serve with only one during each of his forays and he broke the O'Connell serve twice.
The second set was a bit more even. O'Connell though still couldn't attack the Sinner serve no matter how hard he tried. Albeit it was more of an O'Connell display on serve this time as he managed to stave off the Sinner threat.
But like the phrase keeping the wolves at the door, the same can be said for the final set as Sinner claimed it 6-2 as he broke at either side of the set to claim it and move through.
Very much still the player to beat and given the cloud that has surrounded him with the doping storm and scandal, it perhaps can add real fuel to his fire this week to claim a second Grand Slam title. One that surely he will be favourite to seal.
