After
Carlos Alcaraz fell to
Alexander Zverev at the 2024
Australian Open, tennis pundit
Mats Wilander believes the Spaniard's loss could be due to his extravagant style of play.
Alcaraz committed several uncharacteristic errors in his four set loss to Zverev, and appeared to be at a loss for words following his defeat. The Wimbledon champion was particularly bad in the first two sets, and was unable to rediscover his rhythm, eventually falling to the Olympic gold medalist.
Wilander believes Alcaraz's approach could lead to costly mistakes
"[Alcaraz] constantly maintains his character as a risk-taking player, whether the score is 0-0 or 5-5," wrote Wilander in a column for L'Equipe. "When [Alcaraz] plays well, he is the most fun and exciting player I have ever seen in my life , but this personality can cause defeats like this.
"Carlos Alcaraz's strange choice of blows at the beginning of a match in which he was clearly in a bad mood. It's like he didn't realize that he had to find his rhythm first before he let the horses loose."
