The former coach of Andre Agassi, Brad Gilbert talked about Kyrgios recently noting the interesting dynamic of raw talent and hard for with him.
Kyrgios is undoubtedly one of the most talented players to emerge in tennis in recent memory. Even at the earliest stages of his career, it was pretty evident ye the Australian was never fully committed to the sport. Only now do we see a serious amount of work being put in by him with a goal of becoming better and it's yielded some pretty amazing results.
A few trophies, deep runs and a Wimbledon final. Gilbert talked about that noting that many would have wished for Kyrgios to have been a bit more serious:
"Obviously, the one player who maybe has the most talent
that you wish that maybe there were some things that he could do a
little bit differently is Kyrgios. But then again, maybe if he did have
this, maybe it wouldn't work for him. You don't know."
As he explained, if Kyrgios was more committed to the sport maybe the results would not have been this year. It's impossible to know as none of us has a crystal ball. He did address one fundamental flaw that many tennis fans have:
"I do find that a lot of times now that everybody feels
like the difference between No. 1 and 100 is just mental. I say if it
was really that simple, everybody would be great. There is a lot of
difference between 1 and 100 in skillset. But I do think that having
kind of a good mental resolve, it kind of helps you be a little more
resilient."
