The mayor of Manacor has requested a meeting to enact upon a plan made by the city council last year of making a statue to honour Nadal.
The decision was made after Nadal captured the 21st grand slam of his career at the Australian Open and since then plans have been further made. The mayor of the city has now requested a formal meeting with Nadal to ask for his approval of the statue being made. The initial decision was made last year with a statement that read:
"Manacor City Council will install a sculpture in homage to the greatest Manacor tennis player of all time: Rafael Nadal. This has been decided by the spokespersons of all the municipal groups and the mayor Miquel Oliver, after the tennis player's last historic victory."
According to the Majorca Daily Bulleting, the sketch of the bronze statue has already been made. It depicts the Mallorcan sitting down and looking straight ahead, and beside him is the younger version of himself.
It should be placed at the Palace Square. Nadal already has a statue at the Roland Garros.
