With the Laver Cup taking place this weekend, John McEnroe expressed his joy at returning to the event and leading Team World as it's captain.
The former World No.1 compared his emotions during his playing days to now, when he undertakes a coach-like role for Team World at the event.
“I think it’s pretty similar, actually,” McEnroe said. “I love team events. I played team sports as a kid. Loved Davis Cup, had a lot more meaning when I was playing it, I think."
Furthermore, the American was in support of coaching being allowed during matches at the Laver Cup, stating that it brought something different to the sport. On-court coaching is not allowed during any ATP or Grand Slam events.
"So an event like this brings something new to the table for our sport, and I think it’s awesome,” added McEnroe. “You know, we get to sort of rally behind each other. Obviously in tennis there is not coaching very often, so it’s just nice to be part of it in a small way for this week.”
