Andrey Rublev earned Team Europe their third consecutive win of the 2021
Laver Cup, defeating Team World's
Diego Schwartzman on Friday night.
Rublev pulled off the 4-6 6-3 11-9 victory at the TD Garden in Boston, energized by his Team Europe teammates. The Russian got off to a 2-0 lead to start the match, before being broken back as Schwartzman leveled things at 2-2. With both men fighting for their respective teams, it was Schwartzman who obtained the vital break to win the first set.
Momentum seemed to swing Rublev's way at the start of the second set, as the Russian raced to a 4-1 lead. However, Schwartzman rallied back to even the score at 3-4, with the Argentine serving. Nonetheless, Rublev upped his intensity, breaking Schwartzman a second time and pushing the match to a deciding tiebreak.
The match tiebreak saw both men exchange mini-breaks, before Schwartzman obtained a 7-5 lead. His Team Europe opponent was able to level the score at 8-8, and even held a match point at 9-8 but saw it evaporate with a double fault. However, Rublev kept his poise and eventually closed out the match giving Team Europe a huge 3-0 lead.
