Matteo Berrettini came back to win against Auger-Aliassime in a dramatic match to give Europe the 2-0 lead against World 6-7(3) 7-5 10-8.
It was a dramatic match, it was the longest match in
Laver Cup history with it lasting almost 3 hours despite the final set being a match tiebreak. Two great friends went head to head in the Laver Cup and early it was Bererttini who was better. The Italian had early break points that the Canadian saved. After that, we saw Auger-Aliassime apply huge pressure on Berrettini breaking him midway through the 1st.
Felix served for the set at 5-3 and had 30-0 but Berrettini fought himself to the break. He tied it up at 5-5 and we ended up in the tiebreak. In it, it was the Canadian who played better winning all the crucial rallies to win it 7-3. The 2nd set was another nail-biter as Berrettini once again proved better early. Similar to the first set he failed to use early break points and that changed the momentum.
For the rest of the set, Berrettini had to save numerous break points oftentimes finding himself in very difficult spots. He had a huge hold of serve at 5-5 to take a 6-5 lead before finally breaking Felix in the next game to take a 7-5 lead. The match went into a match tiebreak where the winner would be the player who got to 10 points first.
Both played great tennis, had amazing moments while also mistakes coming from nerves. Felix was up 5-3, then 7-5 but in the end, it was Berrettini who emerged victorious with 10-8. A sensational match that saw Europe take a 2-0 lead against the World.
