Daniil Medvedev came back to defeat Frenchman Richard Gasquet while Ugo Humbert did the same to Russian Pavel Kotov in St. Petersburg.
Daniil Medvedev started off his St. Petersburg campaign with a match against Richard Gasquet and despite early struggles, he ultimately prevailed. The 99-minute match started with Medvedev losing the opening set but he came back to win 3-6 6-3 6-0. The early struggles for Medvedev were in only one single game but losing his serve in that game gave Gasquet the opportunity to win the set which he did.
It became clear to Daniil that he had to step up so he did, by playing aggressively in the 2nd set. That produced result early as Medvedev broke Gasquet at the start of the set to take 4-1 lead. He held it throughout that set with good serving a solid baseline play. After winning that set 6-3 he continued playing well in the final one as well. Gasquet had no answer and the Russian's lead continued growing to the delight of the home fans. In the end, he smashed Richard with 6-0 to move in St. Petersburg.
A similar thing happened in the previous match as well except it was a Frenchman who came back to defeat a Russian. It was a much tougher match than the one between Medvedev and Gasquet as the player's spent two and a half hours on the court. Humbert played a good first set but was overmatched by Kotov who was inspired playing on home soil and in front of his fans.
After that Humbert started playing much better slowly taking control of the match-winning the next two sets 6-2 6-3. All in all, it's a victory for Humbert who hasn't been playing well since the restart so this will certainly make him happy.
