Stan Wawrinka concluded the Wednesday programme at the
St. Petersburg Open with a victory over native Evgeny Donskoy.
Stan Wawrinka is through to the next round at the St. Petersburg Open but his advancement wasn't as smooth as he had hoped. The 3 set undertaking took him just over one and a half hour with the end result being 6-1 3-6 6-3.
He started the match off in brilliant fashion blowing Donskoy away in the opening set which he won 6-1 in just 28 minutes. Everything worked for Stan while pretty much nothing worked for Donskoy. The Russian was eager to forget about that set and move on to the next one. The 2nd set was much better from the Russian as he played a comfortable style of tennis for him winning service games with ease.
Wawrinka didn't struggle much as well but late in the set at 3-4, he played a poor game which Donskoy took advantage of breaking him and taking the 5-3 lead. He then won the set with 6-3. Wawrinka was eager no to repeat the mistake from the previous set so he started out aggressively. Donskoy fended off the first break points but two games later he failed to that.
Wawrinka took the 4-1 lead which he maintained for the rest of the set until he closed it out with 6-3. A bit harder for Wawrinka than he would have liked but he was never a player to be unhappy after a victory so he won't be this time as well.
