A great match was played between
Daniil Medvedev and
Hugo Gaston at the
Paris Masters where Medvedev remained calm under great pressure 7-6(7) 6-4.
The Bercy crowd is known to create an incredibly tense atmosphere at the event, especially when a native player is playing. This match was no exception with every good move by Gaston being followed by a roar of the crowd. The young Frenchman felt that energy and he played very good tennis from the start. Medvedev was solid as well but at times he was outshined by his opponent.
That allowed Gaston to break Medvedev at 4-4 giving him the 5-4 lead and a huge chance to win the opening set. He jumped out to a 40-0 lead and it seemed like he would be able to do it but he completely threw it away. Medvedev fought his way back to a deuce before breaking Gaston to make it 5-5. In the end, we ended up in a tiebreak.
It was a very close one with both players having chances. Gaston once again had a huge chance at 5-4 with two serves coming up but he botched it with questionable decision-making. In the end, Medvedev was able to outlast his opponent and win it with 9-7. The 2nd set featured another letdown by Gaston similar to the one he faced against Alcaraz.
Instead of falling behind 5-0 like in that match, he only fell behind 0-4 and his chances severely diminished. He did stage a mini-comeback to make it 4-3 but after that Medvedev took control of the match once more. Medvedev went on to close it out with 6-4 moving on to the semifinal.
