Just hours
before his participation in the 2024
French Open,
Rafael Nadal maintains an
incredible statistic of 80 consecutive victories against players 'not named'
Novak Djokovic. Only the Serbian 24-time Grand Slam champion has been able to
defeat the King of Clay at
Roland Garros over the past 15 years.
Nadal's
supremacy in Paris is practically impossible to replicate. With a record of
112-3 (97.4%), the Spaniard has won 14 French Open titles since his debut in
2005. In the last 19 years, he has only suffered defeats against Robin
Soderling and Novak Djokovic (twice).
The most
recent loss occurred in the semifinals of the 2021 French Open, where Djokovic,
the world No. 1 at the time, overcame Nadal in four sets before claiming the
title for the second time in his career. Six years earlier, in 2015, 'Nole'
secured a victory in the quarterfinals but ended up as runner-up after losing
to
Stan Wawrinka in the final.
However, in
the last 15 years, no one else has managed to defeat Nadal at Roland Garros.
The only player to do so, apart from Djokovic, was Soderling during his
legendary 2009 campaign. The Swedish 23rd seed shocked the world by defeating
the world No. 1 and four-time consecutive champion Rafa Nadal in four sets in
the fourth round of the tournament. Soderling went on to reach the final but
lost to world No. 2
Roger Federer.
Following
Soderling's victory over Nadal, the Spaniard has accumulated 80 wins and only
two losses against Djokovic. As Nadal prepares to debut in the 2024 French
Open, it is up to the Spaniard to extend this impressive statistic even
further, though the challenge will be formidable against the German world No. 4
Alexander Zverev.
