"Most fun 2 weeks of my life" - Ben Shelton indicates next tournament after heartbreaking US Open final defeat

After his heartbreaking final defeat at the US Open, Ben Shelton has already set his sights on new challenges. The American has a busy period coming up as he posted his first social media message since the loss at Flushing Meadows.

Shelton broke new ground in New York over the past couple of weeks and left in a new career-high fourth in the ATP Rankings. He produced some incredible performances in his remarkable route to a first ever Grand Slam final, the biggest of them all coming against Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller that finished at 3:33 in the morning.

He would come back from a set down to defeat fellow countryman Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals to set up a clash against the number one seed Alexander Zverev. It would be too much of an ask for the 23-year-old to take Zverev, who produced a very solid performance, proving his worth as a Grand Slam champion.

After falling 2-0 behind, Shelton had work to do. He managed to get one set on the board, but Zverev went up another level and the American was simply hapless. The German got over the line and won a second Grand Slam title of 2026 with the wait going on for Shelton.

Overall, it was a brilliant couple of weeks for Shelton. This came in the wake of his Canadian Open title defence, meaning that he is in great form and performances like the one against Alcaraz show what kind of a condition he is in.

However, there is still evidently more progress to be made before he can become a regular challenger for these types of tournaments. He will have to wait until the start of 2027 at the Australian Open before going again. He has since posted a message on Instagram briefly reminiscing on the fabulous competition he participated in while sending a sporting message towards the winner.

"Most fun 2 weeks of my life," he wrote. "I left absolutely everything out there on the court, and despite being gutted about losing yesterday, I’m more motivated than I’ve ever been. On my way to Prague to play for USA vs Czech this week. Let’s get a dub for the US. [Alexander Zverev] congrats on your 2nd slam this year.”

As mentioned in his message, Shelton is leaving home turf and traversing back to Europe to compete for his country against the Czech Republic in what is a very tricky fixture. The American No.1 will compete in the Davis Cup for only the second time and first since the 2024 Finals appearance.

Learner Tien, Martin Damm, Christian Harrison and Austin Krajicek make up the participants in the Czech capital, with Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul having both withdrawn. The likes of Jakub Mensik, Jiri Lehecka, Tomas Machac and Vit Kopriva will prove to be stubborn opposition in a tough away draw. The winners will go to the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna in November.

After that excursion, Shelton will be representing Team World at the Laver Cup in London. It will be the third time featuring in the exhibition with some of the best players in the world lining up to taste glory.

It is a brutal period for Shelton, who will be feeling it from that busy and exhausting two weeks at Flushing Meadows. The Asian swing would then be next on his horizon. The Japan Open followed by the Shanghai Masters, the penultimate Masters 1000 event of 2026, would lead into the European indoor hardcourt swing. Still lots to play for as Shelton keeps his head up after a ground-breaking tournament.
