Andy Murray defeated
Ryan Peniston 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of the 2023
Wimbledon.
The Scottish player arrived at the third Grand Slam of the year showcasing great form on grass during the challengers and recently lifted two trophies. Murray made the decision to skip the French Open and focus on the grass court tournaments, which has proven to be a successful strategy.
In his debut, he faced Ryan Peniston, a British player ranked No. 268 in the world, who received a wildcard entry into the main draw from the organization. Murray performed well with his serve, which allowed him to gain advantages throughout the match. He faced the only two break points against him in the first set and saved both of them. A single break in the sixth game was enough for him to take the first set 6-3.
From that point on, Peniston appeared noticeably inferior to Murray, who didn't give his compatriot any chances and cruised to a 6-0 second set victory in just 39 minutes. Winning 82% of his opponent's second-serve points, Peniston could hardly make an impact against the 2-time Wimbledon champion.
The third set ended with a 6-1 scoreline, with Murray winning 90% of his first-serve points and 67% of his second-serve points. He also capitalized on 67% of the points played on Peniston's second serve, showing that the former world No. 1 is relentless in his return game.
Another key aspect for Murray was his success at the net. The 3-time Grand Slam champion won 100% of the points when approaching the net, totaling 17 points won. Murray needed just two hours and three minutes to secure his first victory at the 2023 Wimbledon.
In the second round, he awaits the winner of the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem, which was suspended due to rain with Thiem leading 6-3, 3-4.
