Andy Murray
revealed that his children had expressed frustration at not seeing their father
lift trophies until the Surbiton Trophy.
The former
world No. 1 made the decision to skip the 2023 French Open in order to focus on
the grass court season and prepare for his upcoming participation in Wimbledon,
a tournament he won in 2013 and 2016.
So far, the
decision has paid off, as Murray claimed the title at the Surbiton Challenger
last week and secured another victory at the Nottingham Challenger, where he is
the top seed. After lifting the trophy with a final win over Austria's Jurij
Rodionov (6-3, 6-2), the world No. 43 became the oldest man to win a grass
court title and it was his first tournament victory since winning a trophy in
his home country.
Murray
spoke about his children's desire to see him lift another trophy, highlighting
their frustration in the past.
"It's
brilliant to win another one. My kids are always asking me when I go away if I
come home with a trophy and that’s been rare these last few years.
“They
actually came two minutes before the rain came my wife had to take them back
home. So they’ve missed the end of the match but I think they're watching on
the TV so Sophia, Edie, Teddy and Lola - I hope you're watching and I'll bring
you home a trophy tonight," 3-time Grand Slam champion said.
"Today
for me was obviously a good win. Jurij played brilliant this whole week, had a
great tournament and he’s won all of his matches really comfortably and started
the match really well today so I was obviously happy to get through
today," Murray added.
"But
it’s been a perfect start to the grass season. I chose to come and play here
and in Nottingham to hopefully get lots of matches under my belt so this week
has been the perfect start."
Murray will
face Hugo Grenier today in the second round at the challenger of Nottingham.
