Britain’s tennis star
Andy Murray’s participation in the upcoming
US Open is doubtful after he suffered another injury.
The 36-year-old was taking part in the Omnium Banque
Nationale Canadian Open where he was due to Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the round
of 16.
However, moments before that, the former world number one withdrew
from the competition, citing an abdominal injury.
“The issue is my abdominal,” said Murray as quoted by the
Daily
Express. “So unfortunately I’m not going to be able to play this evening. I’m
really sorry. I know I feel like I’ve let you down. I’ve rarely been in this
situation in my career and I feel terrible.”
“I had a very similar issue last year in the tournament in
Stuttgart before Wimbledon which forced me to miss the Queen’s Club tournament
and I was able to play Wimbledon,” Murray said.
“It took me about 10 to 12 days before I was feeling good
again. This is not as bad as that but obviously the danger if you compete and
play on it is you make it worse. So, I’ll need to see how it develops over the
coming days and hopefully feel better in a few days. I’m really sorry. Thank
you.”
The news will be a concerning one for Murray fans who would
be hoping to see him participate in the last Grand Salm of the year.
The Glasgow-born has struggled with fitness concerns
throughout his career and it was because of hip injury he announced retirement back
in 2019.
However, Murray made a stunning comeback a few years later
and is still playing at the highest level.
Murray has won the
US Open once in his career — back in 2012
when he defeated the current world number two Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the
final with a score of 7–6,
7–5, 2–6, 3–6, 6–2.
