After
withdrawing from the 2023
French Open,
Rafael Nadal clarified that the end of
his career will not be announced in a press conference.
It is
official that the 14-time French Open champion will not be participating in the
clay Grand Slam for the first time in 18 years. The Spanish player has only
competed in one tournament this year, the Australian Open, where he was
defeated in the second round by Mackenzie McDonald. Week after week, he has
been withdrawing from several of his favorite tournaments, including Barcelona,
Monte-Carlo, and Madrid.
Unfortunately,
Nadal has been unable to overcome his physical issues and announced that he
will not be playing at Roland Garros and will also be absent for several
months.
During the
press conference held at the Rafa Nadal Academy, he revealed that his
retirement will likely take place in 2024 if his body allows it, dispelling any
doubts that existed prior to the conference. The 22-time Grand Slam champion
stated that he will fight for his career to end in a different way:
"I
believe I don't deserve to finish [now]. I think I have fought enough during
all my sporting career so that my end is not today, here in a press conference.
My ending will be in another way, and I will fight so that my end will be in
another way," Nadal said.
After the
2023 French Open, the Spanish player will drop out of the top 100 rankings for
the first time in 20 years, and it is likely that he will be unable to defend
the rest of his points throughout the year, resulting in a further decline in
the rankings as the weeks go by.
