Nick Kyrgios made his return to tennis at the Stuttgart event where he played last year and it was a very interesting match against Yibing Wu of China losing in two sets 7-5 6-3.
The start of the match was pretty much as expected with Kyrgios seemingly not missing a beat showcasing his serve pretty early. He would rack up 11 aces in the opening set dominating on his serve and losing only a handful of points. Wu had more issues on his serve as he actually faced break points but the Australian was left empty-handed as he didn't use any of them. Kyrgios really didn't face any issues until the last game of the set where his focus dropped and he allowed Wu some chances which the Chinese player used to take the set 7-5.
The second set opened well for both as neither really faced too many issues. Kyrgios looked a bit more serious about winning the match dominating on his serve in the opening few games while trying to be more active on return. It didn't really work out as Wu was able to cruise towards another simple finish taking the second set 6-3.
An interesting outing for Kyrgios with a somewhat predictable result. Having not played in a month certainly meant that Kyrgios would have some problems. He didn't have any problems when his serve was working as he finished off the majority of those points easily. He did have a lot of problems when he missed the first set winning only 7 of 18 points. He had 15 aces and 5 double faults which are pretty expected of Kyrgios.
Generally a very good win for Wu and a solid outing for Kyrgios though the Australian will need to put in some more work before he hits his peak hopefully at Wimbledon.
