The current
champion,
Nick Kyrgios, will not be present at the Citi Open, and he will
experience a significant drop in the rankings.
In 2023,
Kyrgios has only played one match on the ATP tour, but he has remained high in
the rankings due to the large number of points he accumulated last year during
the grass court season.
Despite
Wimbledon not awarding points in 2022, the momentum from being a finalist
carried over to the Citi Open, where Kyrgios clinched the title by defeating
Yoshito Nishioka in the final.
The
Australian provided an update on his physical condition and announced his
withdrawal from the tournament due to his ongoing wrist injury, which is yet to
fully recover. As a result, there are still uncertainties regarding Kyrgios' return
to competitive tournaments.
"Unfortunately
my body is not ready to compete yet. My wrist is still not anywhere near to
pain-free. Keep you all updated," Kyrgios said about his injury.
Currently,
the 28-year-old athlete is ranked as the world No. 35, despite having only one
defeat in 2023, which occurred in the first round of the Stuttgart Open against
Chinese player Wu Yibing.
Kyrgios'
absence from the Citi Open will cost him 500 points, bringing his total points
down to 675, and he will likely fall out of the top 85 in the rankings.
In the
following week he defends 180 points from reaching the quarterfinals in 2022 Canadian
Open, where he was defeated by Hubert Hurckacz. If he is unable to participate
and fails to defend those points, Kyrgios will drop to 495 points, placing him
outside the top 120.
His return
was originally scheduled for the Ultimate Tennis Showdown last week, but he failed
to recover in time and decided not to compete. Nevertheless, he did participate
in the exhibition as a coach for his friend Frances Tiafoe.
The Citi
Open has already experienced other significant absences, with Canadian player
Denis Shapovalov withdrawing due to injury, and world No. 3 Danil Medvedev also
pulling out of the American tournament for undisclosed reasons.
