Kei Nishikori extends his winning streak at the Tokyo Olympic Games by beating Marcos Giron 7-6(5) 3-6 6-1.
Nishikori entered the Olympic Games in mixed form yet his tennis has been nothing short of spectacular so far. He is playing both singles and doubles and today was the first match where he played subpar. He had an early 3-1 lead but Giron was able to come back. The American is playing very well at the moment and he forced a tiebreak in the first set.
It was a very exciting tiebreak where neither player could go on a run but players mostly traded points back and forward. In the end, Nishikori was able to prevail 7-5. That momentum did not carry over in the 2nd set as Giron was able to take advantage of some bad mistakes by Nishikori taking an early 2-0 lead.
From there players once again traded but it was games and not points. Giron served well enough to give himself a chance and ultimately he won the 2nd set with 6-1. It was a wake-up call for Nishikori who came out much stronger in the 3rd.
It was finally some of the levels he showed in earlier rounds and expectedly Giron had no counter. Nishikori broke him twice to take a 5-1 lead before closing out the match with 6-1.
