Alex de Minaur finally got a long overdue win over
Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter finals at the
Mexican Open. The Australian came from a set behind to prevail 1-6 6-3 6-3 after 10 losses against the Greek over a six year period.
"Every time I’ve got to play [Tsitsipas], I get reminded about my match-up, so I’m glad I got one on the board," de Minaur said afterwards.
"I would like to say that no one beats me 11 times in a row. But, hey, Stefanos has had my number for a very long time, so I’m glad I was able to get one back."
De Minaur will now play Jack Draper in the semi finals on Friday night. The defending champion must win the title again in 2024 if he wants to stay in the world's top 10.
Fighting for victory
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a good start to the year, helping Australia make the semi final of the United Cup, before reaching the final of the Rotterdam Open where he lost to another nemesis in Jannik Sinner.
De Minaur admitted he didn't play his best, but was proud of the fighting spirit he showed to progress. "I knew coming in that no matter what happened, I was going to leave it all out there – whether I play my best tennis, my worst, or anything in between," he added.
“I’m extremely happy to manage to turn this one around."
