Well-known tennis commentator, Robbie Koenig doesn't believe that a passing of the torch is evident when it comes to Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic's match at Wimbledon.
Compared in some circles to when Roger Federer faced Pete Sampras in 2001, Koenig disagrees with that comparison.
Alcaraz won 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to win his first Grand Slam on grass and while he sits atop of the game at the moment, Sampras and Federer were revered as two of the most gifted grass court players in history.
The former South African player said that he only narrowly defeated Djokovic sneaking through and that after a stop start few years, Djokovic will only get better.
This after the 23-time Grand Slam champion has spent the past few years in tennis limbo due to the vaccine situation and will finally return to the US Open this year after missing out in 2022.
"Couple of commentators here were talking about the Federer-Sampras match being similar to that. It’s not similar at all. Djokovic has won two majors here by the way and Alcaraz has just and only just sneaked out this one," Koenig said.
"He's [Djokovic] has such a disrupted last couple of years that, if he’s going to be in full flow and play the schedule he wants for the next three or four years he’s going to be challenging at the shop. I mean look how easily cruised through the draw at Wimbledon."
"But there's definitely no passing of the torch I don’t even think it’s remotely comparable to the Sampras-Federer match that everybody was talking about," he added.
