Novak Djokovic is now guaranteed to stay World No.1 until at least April Fools Day on April 1, 2024 post Indian Wells and Miami with no sort of attempt to usurp him possible before that time. Djokovic will as a result sit atop the world rankings extending his record to 418 weeks.
This is exactly double the reign that Rafael Nadal has held in his career of 209 weeks in an astonishing statistic and one that also highlights Djokovic's stranglehold still on the game. He has held the accolade since winning the US Open in 2023.
He has led since September 11, 2023 for 24 weeks with the reigns being exchanged between the Serbian and Carlos Alcaraz since 2022 when Daniil Medvedev was the last different World Number One over two reigns. This was before the real emergence of Alcaraz as a tennis powerhouse. But also it shows that Djokovic isn't set to be unseated anytime soon.
His COVID-19 vaccine decision was seen as foolish by some in terms of the rankings at the time, but in reality, the way he picks and chooses means that it wasn't too much of a problem. He returns to Indian Wells and Miami in the coming weeks knowing he has zero to defend and can only gain meaning that barring first round losses in both tournaments, he is likely to extend his run over players whom are defending huge ranking points such as Alcaraz.
Jannik Sinner is the most likely to mount a charge for top spot with Daniil Medvedev dropping due to not defending two titles recently and Alcaraz having multiple crowns to defend between now and Wimbledon. At that point though, he will have the impetus with the Spaniard not winning a title since. So the battle for World No.1 while not a factor right now could be this Summer.
