Novak Djokovic is looking to equal
Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras' three
Cincinnati Open titles as he prepares for the final against Carlos Alcaraz.
23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic has achieved a monumental 94 ATP titles throughout his career so far. The 36-year-old is also the only player to win all Masters 1000 tournaments, and the only player to win each tournament twice.
However, regarding the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Djokovic is trailing behind three other legendary players in the record for most titles won. Nevertheless, he has the chance to equal two of them with a win this year.
Djokovic behind Agassi, Sampras and Federer
Djokovic has won the ATP Masters 1000 event twice before, in 2018 and 2020. He has not competed in the tournament since his last victory but now he is back in Cincinnati and challenging for a third victory.
This would equal Agassi, who won the Cincinnati Masters three times. The first two times were over consecutive years in 1995 and 1996, and the final time was almost ten years later in 2004.
Meanwhile, Sampras also has three victories at the tournament, in 1992, 1997, and 1999. Both were legends of the sport in their day, with Agassi holding eight Grand Slam titles to his name and Sampras boasting fourteen, a record at the time.
However, Djokovic still has a long way to go before he can equal
Roger Federer's seven titles at Cincinnati, the most in the Open Era. The Swiss tennis legend won the tournament in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2015.
Djokovic will face world No. 1 Alcaraz in the final, in what will act as a re-match of the Wimbledon final last month, where the young Spaniard defeated the seven-time SW19 champion in a five-set thriller.
