Novak
Djokovic clinched his 90th victory at the
Australian Open by advancing from the
first round with a triumph over Dino Prizmic, securing a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4
victory. The 10-time Aussie Open champion has now amassed over 90 Men’s Singles
wins in three different Grand Slam events, with 92 at the French Open and 90 at
Wimbledon.
It wasn't
an easy match for Djokovic against the 18-year-old Prizmic, who saved six match
points in the four-set duel, with three of the four sets lasting over an hour. ‘Nole’
praised Prizmic's remarkable performance, considering it was the teenager's
first experience playing on such a big stage: “It was an amazing performance
for a teenager who never had the experience of playing on such a big stage,”
the world No. 1 said.
New record
for Djokovic
It has
become a routine for Djokovic to continually break records, especially in Grand
Slams where he shines the most. His 90th triumph in Melbourne marks the third
Grand Slam where he has achieved at least 90 victories, setting a remarkable
record.
Australia
is where Djokovic has enjoyed the most success with a record of 90-8 (92%),
although he maintains similar numbers across all four Grand Slams, at least in
terms of victories. At the French Open, where he has secured 3 titles, he
boasts a record of 92-16 (85%), and at Wimbledon, he stands at 92-11 (89%).
Additionally,
Djokovic has 88 victories at the US Open in 17 appearances (87%), putting him
just two matches away from reaching 90 victories. This means he could complete
the record by at least reaching the third round at Flushing Meadows,
considering he has never exited the tournament before the third round in his
career.
Federer and
Nadal's Grand Slam victories comparison
In terms of
Grand Slam victories, Federer excels in three major tournaments, with his
highest triumphs in Australia (105), Wimbledon (102), and the US Open (89). The
Swiss player holds the record for the most victories at both Wimbledon and the
Australian Open, falling just one short of 90 wins at Flushing Meadows. His
lowest Grand Slam victory count is at the French Open (73).
On the
other hand, Nadal dominates with an incredible 112 victories at Roland Garros,
surpassing the 90-win mark. However, his performance at the other Grand Slam
events is not as prolific. The Spanish player has accumulated 77 victories in
Australia, 58 at Wimbledon, and 67 at the US Open.
