Serbia’s legendary tennis star,
Novak Djokovic, is set to return to the court for the playoff encounter in the
Davis Cup. Serbia are set to
face Greece in the Davis Cup tie in the Belgrade on Saturday. The 37-year-old is regarded as the greatest player in the
history of men’s tennis in the singles category, having won as many as 24 Grand
Slam titles. Djokovic is set to return to the court in the Davis Cup on
Saturday where he will face world number 770 Ioannis Xilas.
The former world number one will be hoping that the contest
on Saturday will give him an opportunity to return to winning ways after a
rather disappointing US Open, where he was knocked out after losing in the third
round to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin with a score of 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. After that
match, Serbia’s legendary tennis star admitted that he played the worst
major event in his career and that even reaching the third round was an
achievement.
Overall, Djokovic had a disappointing Grand Slam season. For
the first time in seven year, the Belgrade-born star failed to win a single
major event in a calendar year. His best outing in a major event in 2024 came
at Wimbledon, where he finished as the runner-up after losing to Spain’s Carlos
Alcaraz in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
Despite all of that, Djokovic will remember the 2024 season
for all the good reasons as he finally managed to complete his trophy cabinet. The
current world number four went on to win the gold medal for the country at the
Paris Olympics as he defeated Alcaraz in the singles category final in straight
sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6. That victory was even more special considering that the legendary tennis star suffered a serious knee injury just weeks before the competition, which forced him to retire from the French Open just before the start of the quarterfinal against Norway’s Casper Ruud.
