Novak
Djokovic fought to advance to the third round of
Indian Wells after defeating
Aleksander Vukic (No. 69) by 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. The Serbian achieved his 400th
Masters 1000 triumph, making him the second player to reach this milestone,
currently surpassed only by Rafael Nadal with 406.
The world
No. 1 played his first match at Tennis Paradise since 2019 when he fell in the
third round against Philipp Kohlschreiber.
The match started well for Djokovic,
who secured an early break to lead 2-0. The Serbian did not give many
opportunities from the service line and maintained his superiority without any
problems. With a 4-2 advantage, he secured a second break and closed the set
from his service at 6-2.
Nole had a
78% first serve compared to Vukic's mere 52%. Additionally, the 23-times Grand
Slam champion won 60% of the points with the second serve, compared to Vukic's
29%.
In the
beginning of the second set, the Australian had better luck in crucial points,
securing a break in the second game and then saving three break points against
his service to lead 3-0. The advantage did not last long for the world No. 69,
and he paid the price for points played with the second serve, allowing
Djokovic to recover the break.
It seemed
that everything would be decided in the tie-break, but Vukic played an
impeccable return game and clinched the second set 7-5.
In the
third set, Djokovic showcased his No. 1 status and, without facing issues on
his serve, maintained control. A break in the fifth game became the decisive
advantage for 'Nole,' who capitalized on the tension in the closing moments of
the match and secured one last break for a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory.
In the
third round, he will face lucky loser Luca Nardi (No. 123), who entered
following the withdrawal of Tomas Etcheverry (30th seed) and received a bye in
the first round. Nardi comes after defeating Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (No.
50) by 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
