Rafael Nadal publicly praised Martin Landaluce after the 20-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Miami Open, marking the best result of his career and his first appearance in a Masters 1000 main draw. The Spaniard entered the tournament ranked No. 151 and without a win on the ATP Tour in 2026, but produced a sequence of results that shifted his position within a single week.
Landaluce’s run was built on wins over higher-ranked opponents, including Top 20 players Luciano Darderi and Karen Khachanov, before adding a fourth-round victory against Sebastian Korda. In that match, he saved a match point, managing key moments with consistency from the baseline and a controlled service game.
The result moves him up 45 places in the live rankings to No. 106, placing him close to direct entry into ATP Tour events. It also represents a transition point, moving from occasional appearances to a more regular presence at tour level if results are sustained.
Landaluce had only two ATP-level wins prior to Miami and had not won a match this season. The shift in output across a single tournament reflects both favourable conditions and an ability to maintain level across multiple rounds.

Nadal highlights Landaluce’s progress

Nadal’s message was brief but direct. The former World No. 1, who has followed Landaluce’s development closely through the Rafa Nadal Academy, highlighted the result without adding expectation or projection. “Congratulations. Great tournament. On to the next challenges,” the 22-time Grand Slam champion stated on social media.
The connection between the two is relevant. Landaluce trained at Nadal’s academy during his development years and remains part of a group of Spanish players transitioning through structured pathways into the professional Tour.
The former World No. 1 also closely followed Landaluce’s campaign at the recent Next Gen ATP Finals — where he was eliminated in the round-robin stage. In the match against his compatriot Rafa Jodar, they counted on Nadal in a privileged on-site position, watching the match in person, and the 14-time Roland Garros champion even spent time speaking with them and offering advice during their week in Jeddah.

Clear step forward in competitive level

Beyond the ranking impact, the week in Miami showed a measurable improvement in match management. Landaluce held serve under pressure in several matches and converted key break opportunities against opponents with more experience at ATP level.
The win over Korda, in particular, reflected that progression. Saving match point and closing the match without a drop in level indicated a degree of control that had not been present in earlier appearances on tour.
His previous milestones — including the 2022 US Open boys’ title and qualification for the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals — suggested potential. Miami was the first instance where that translated into consistent results at Masters 1000 level.
Landaluce’s rapid rise will likely bring adjustments to his schedule — considering he is close to breaking into the Top 100 and his ranking progress will give him the opportunity to compete in higher-category tournaments. For now, his schedule includes participation in the Challenger events in Monza and Oeiras 3 to begin the clay swing.
