Right as soon as
Indian Wells ends, all the attention will swiftly turn from the west coast to the east with the
Miami Open set to follow in suit from March 19-29.
The second Masters 1000 tournament on the spin, the best players in the world are set to switch the Californian desert for Florida in the hope for another successful tournament with it concluding the Sunshine swing and the hardcourt action for the time being as tennis switches to clay.
The favourites will be looking to do their stuff on the big stage again. World number one
Carlos Alcaraz is looking to make up for a dreadful campaign last year when he lost at the opening stage to David Goffin. The 2022 champion won his maiden Masters 1000 title in this event, but since then has failed to reach the final. He could come up against three-time finalist
Jannik Sinner in the final. The Italian won the event in 2024 before missing it last year due to a suspension.
Only Andre Agassi can boast as many titles from the Miami Open than Novak Djokovic. He has claimed six titles in total, but his last one came all the way back in 2016. He has only competed in three Miami Open's since then, reaching the final last year before losing a brace of tiebreaks to Czech sensation Jakub Mensik. He has the pressure to defend a lot of points over the week or a ranking drop will come.
Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev will be hoping to back up their Indian Wells run with another solid performance to finish off the Sunshine swing with Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Felix Auger-Aliassime look to correct those early exits experienced at Indian Wells.
Over on the women's side, and
Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina will go into it not just as the favourites, but as the top two in the world. Already two huge finals they have competed in this year, Rybakina's form in recent months has seen her jump above an out of sorts Iga Swiatek in the rankings. The Pole is struggling for form and is yet to reach a semi-final this year, aside from the United Cup triumph where she was again losing single matches on a regular basis.
The semi-finalists in California, Elina Svitolina and Linda Noskova, have some great momentum heading into this event. Especially Svitolina who reached the semi-final in the Australian Open and final in Dubai where she lost to Jessica Pegula. The American failed to reach the last-four stage of a tournament at Indian Wells for the first time since August 2025. Her incredible record showcases how talented she has been on the court, and now there is the pressure of defending a final from last year, losing to Sabalenka.
Coco Gauff's involvement in Miami Open is still up in the air after retiring from her prior match with a left arm injury. Amanda Anisimova, Jasmine Paolini and Victoria Mboko all have firm title ambitions, while Mirra Andreeva's run of WTA 1000 title defences is over. Now on the cusp of the top 10, she can now look forward to regaining some of those points.
