Former German number one Tommy Haas fears that Alexander Zverev will drop further in the rankings if he doesn't turn things around quickly with his tennis.
About a year ago Zverev was possibly playing some of the best tennis he played in a very long time. The German was storming through Roland Garros with a decent chance to win it however a year after that he's largely struggling with his tennis staring at a possibly big drop in the rankings. His injury was a bad one and it took him a long time to come back but he's yet to find a very good rhythm since coming back.
Speaking on him, Haas said:
“Zverev has had a lot of ups and downs for a long time, which is quite normal after such a long injury. But at some point he has to flip the switch. He has to defend points for the next three or four weeks. Otherwise he falls out of the top 30, 40 or 50 in the world. Then the strong opponents threaten early in the tournaments. This situation is new to him.”
He also spoke about his chance to win a grand slam event in the future:
“It is becoming increasingly difficult for him to achieve his last major career goal – winning the Grand Slam tournament. The next star is here in Alcaraz. And you still have Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Rune, [Jannik] Sinner, [Lorenzo] Musetti. The Americans come with [Taylor] Fritz, [Tommy] Paul and [Frances] Tiafoe. The competition never sleeps.”
